Welcoming Kevin Bidwell to Our Supported Missionaries

In February the Rock PCA began to support Rev. Dr. Kevin J. Bidwell, a minister and church planter with Sheffield Presbyterian Church, which is part of the EPCEW (Evangelical Presbyterian Church of England and Wales).  Many of you had the opportunity to meet Kevin when he preached here last year.  The following is from Kevin and will help you know better how to pray for his family and his ministry…

My wife is Maria, who is originally from The Netherlands and the Lord has blessed us with two daughters. They are Melody (16) and Rivka (14). Both are communicant members at Sheffield Presbyterian Church. Melody is intending to study at Sheffield University, possibly History and something else, which would begin in September 2014.

The church was initiated by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in England and Wales. I have preached since the 1990's and we have served as a family overseas. Following five years full time theological study, including a PhD, I was commissioned to the work of church planting in Sheffield, England. Sheffield is the fifth biggest city in the UK and there are around 1.4 million people in greater Sheffield. There are a number of large cities nearby which means that within 90 minutes’ drive of where we live, there are around 7 million people and there was no Presbyterian church. SPC is now on the map!

In 2010, a church planting Bible study began and in April 2011 the church was formally constituted with 11 members. We have two services on the Lord's Day and a Sunday school for adults and children. We currently have 21 members with another 9 people who are regular worshippers. Of our current members, six have been baptized since we started and only one is a child. We have a good number of new converts and this is a prayer request for their spiritual growth.

The main aim now, as we move towards being constituted for two years at the end of April 2013, is for the Lord's help for particularization in the medium term, for the Lord to raise up elders and deacons, for new families to join, and for continued growth.

We have set up a church planting account as a session (we have four other assessor elders) and Sheffield has funded the monthly Bible study in Berlin. We are also working long term to plant another church in Leeds, Yorkshire which has 1.7 million in greater Leeds.

The support of Rock PCA is indeed a huge blessing.

Yours in the work of the gospel,

Kevin Bidwell
