Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood (Acts 20:28)… And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4).
In an attempt to help you nominate and elect elders (Shepherds) after God’s own heart, last week I included David Murray’s article on what it means to be sheep. We’re all sheep, leaders included, and it is good to understand who we are and what we are like to be led. This week I’m providing David’s description of what kind of shepherds we should elect and pray for. Although he speaks primarily of the pastor, these characteristics are what we should look for in all those elders who would lead us. I hope these will help you pray for your current elders and identify others whom God may have raised up in our midst.
O that the Lord would make us and give us such shepherds today, according to His promise: "Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding" (Jer. 3:15).
