Sheep: Sinners Dear to God’s Own Heart

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:6)

And you are my sheep, human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord God. (Ezekiel 34:31)

Last week we considered the Biblical characteristics a Shepherd (Elder) must possess — even on the smallest level — if he is to watch over the souls of God’s sheep. The Bible uses lots of imagery of this Shepherd/sheep relationship and so it is important for us to consider what sheep and shepherds are like. David Murray, who lived and pastored in the Highlands of Scotland for 12 years, gives some great insight to what we are all like as sheep, including pastors and elders. Let David’s humorous and accurate description of sheep direct you as you think about what you are like and what kind of shepherd it would take to watch over your soul. Next week we’ll see what David has to say specifically about shepherds.

Your fellow sheep,
